Create Rustic Charm With Mexican Talavera Tiles

A unique and colorful type of tile that has been a part of the Mexican tradition for hundreds of years is the Talavera tile. These tiles are the hand-painted tiles that are often seen as part of a splashback feature in some old-style kitchens.
Talavera tiles provide you with an old-world charm while also adding splashes of color throughout the room. They can be placed singly in the center of larger, plain tiles to create an accent on the wall or they can be used more elaborately as border tiles or as the main feature decoration. They are versatile and they come in an endless selection of designs.
These tiles date back the 16th century when Spanish potters from the city of Talavera de la Reina settled in the Mexican town of Puebla. From this city has come some of the most distinguished and eclectic looking tiles you can imagine. The range is endless and the combinations that you can use in the decorative value they add to whatever room you wish to use them in is only bounded by your imagination.
Mexican Talavera tiles are hand-painted and handmade making them all unique. Their imperfections provide greater appeal with the preference being for a rustic look rather than perfectly precise lines and patterns.
While these tiles look good as single tiles, it is when they are placed together in larger mural formations that they really start to show their true beauty. The repeated patterns of some of these tiles blend seamlessly from one tile to the next until a larger pattern is formed. Tiles used as border tiles around the mural can be placed on the wall to differentiate where one design stops and the next begin.
It is possible to walk into a tile store and get lost in the endless possibilities of patterns and color combinations. The only thing that should be holding you back is your own imagination.
