It should not come as a surprise that the subway tile received its name from the iconic tiles that lined the subways in New York’s finest underground transit system. In the early 1970s, these tiles became a popular decorative element for many home designers and they were featured in kitchens, bathrooms and foyers especially. During the 80s, 90s and early 2000s, they drifted out of popular use, but now they have made a big resurgence and they are again in vogue.

Though these tiles popularity diminished for several decades, they have never been considered out of style, and they continue to carry classic appeal. What has been a staple of New York City style for nearly a century can be a fine feature of any bathroom in any home.
